What to Expect During a Euthanasia Appointment

Making the decision to say goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the hardest choices a family can face. Our entire team is committed to making this process peaceful, gentle, and filled with dignity — for both you and your pet.

Before the Appointment

If possible, we recommend calling ahead so we can:

  • Schedule dedicated, uninterrupted time
  • Prepare a quiet, private space
  • Review cremation or aftercare options
  • Answer any questions you may have

You are welcome to bring your pet’s favorite blanket, toy, or treats.

When You Arrive

You will be brought into a private comfort room as quickly as possible. We want this time to feel calm and unhurried. You may spend as much time with your pet as you need before and after the procedure.

If you would like, we can place a soft blanket, dim the lights, or play quiet music — whatever feels most comforting to you.

How the Procedure Works

Euthanasia is a peaceful and painless process. It typically happens in two gentle steps:

  1. Sedation
We first give a medication that allows your pet to fall into a deep, relaxed sleep. This ensures they are completely comfortable and unaware of what is happening. Many pets simply drift off as if they are taking a nap.
You may hold or touch your pet during this time if you wish.
  2. Final Medication
Once your pet is fully asleep, we administer a second medication that stops the heart quickly and painlessly. They do not feel this step.
Passing is typically very peaceful. Sometimes you may notice:
    • A final deep breath
    • Small muscle movements
    • The eyes remaining open

These are normal physical responses and do not mean your pet is uncomfortable.

Afterward

You may stay with your pet for as long as you need. Our team will step out to give you privacy.
We will respectfully handle aftercare according to your wishes:

  • Private cremation (ashes returned to you)
  • Communal cremation
  • Home burial (if legally permitted in your area)

If you would like paw prints, fur clippings, or other memorial items, we are honored to provide them

Grief after losing a pet is real and significant. Please know:

  • There is no “right” way to grieve.
